When I took a Child Development class my senior year of high school we discussed different methods of educational programs that are available for parents today. One method that really stuck in my mind was the Montessori way. The Montessori Method is an approach on teaching that is based on child development theories created by Maria Montessori. This method stresses the importance of self-directed activity, or play, where the teacher acts as the students guide, explaining how to use the activities and materials and assisting the students as they learn. Some of the reasons I find this interesting is that the students’ learning is self-directed, therefore they learn through discovery and at their own individual pace and also, it allows the children to become more independent and build up their self-esteem when they realize that they can accomplish things on their own. I decided to share this with you because I find many aspects of this way of teaching to be beneficial and I thought that you, as future teachers, may also find it useful and be able to incorporate some of the aspects and values of a Montessori education into your education programs.
You can find more information on Montessori here and here! Also there are many videos available on youtube.com if you search Montessori.
