Hi Emily,

I am an aspiring Special Education teacher. I agree with you that "Going to Holland" is a valuable piece of work that provides professionals, teachers, and others who work with children with special needs and their families a better sense of understanding. My professor of a collaboration course read this aloud to our class. It really gave me a chance to put myself in the parent's shoes. While, I already empathize for what families with children with disabilities go through, it opened my eyes to how the life changing event initially affects parents. This is definitely a story I will share with general educators, school psychologists, and other professionals and parents I work with in the future.

I also wanted to get your input of how your child's teachers have supported him/her for the future. I am currently student teaching, and realize that the school I am in does not teach as much self-determination skills to students with disabilities as they should. Does your child know about his/her disability? Does he or her participate in the IEP process? I would really like an unbiased parents opinion.

Thanks : )

This website is so wonderful! Thanks so much for posting about it. I will definately be including it as a resource for my field experiences and when I have my own classroom. I really love how the site divides up the song by the content areas and categories. Not only are there so many to choose from, but the site is easy to access (which is always a plus when trying to find resources quickly). Great find!

You made some really great points here! With inclusion being so highly valued now, the focus on being advocates for the parents of children with disabilities always seems to be the main focus. And while this advocacy is important, it is still very important to remember to include and help the families of students who did not have disabilites.

i agree with kimberly. This is a really innovative idea and if it is proven to work I would instantly use it in my classroom. "The crabbies" as they put it, are a big issue in preschool especially if its a half a day preschool because the kids either got woken up early to come or come right after their nap. Either way it means there will be crabby kids. I hope this method turns out to be effective

this is an excellent post and very relevant to classrooms today. I looked at the site and found it very helpful, especially as the basis for knowledge before having your first conferences with parents of children inan inclusion classroom. The types of concerns addressed will surely arise in some form and then you will be prepared. I love the Sesame Workshop, there is a multitude of helpful information all over their site.

if they don't learn at a young age they will surely be in for a rude awakening when they hit middle school. From observations I have seen kids being taught about cheating but not about plagiarizing. They are equally important and like you said, should definitely be addressed as soon as an assignment can give way to plagiarizing information
